Reseña - "The hundred-year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared"

¡Buenas ratitas!

THE HUNDRED-YEAR OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT OF THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED

Jonas Jonasson

Número de páginas: 394
Editorial: Hesperus Press
Precio: 9.50

Plot

" It all starts on the one-hundredth birthday of Allan Karlsson. Sitting quietly in his room in an old people's home, he is waiting for the party he-never-wanted-anyway to begin. The mayor is going to be there. The press is going to be there. But, as it turns out, Allan is not...Slowly but surely Allan climbs out of his bedroom window, into the flowerbed (in his slippers) and makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving criminals, several murders, a suitcase full of cash, and incompetent police. As his escapades unfold, we learn something of Allan's earlier life in which - remarkably - he helped to make the atom bomb, became friends with American presidents, Russian tyrants, and Chinese leaders, and was a participant behind the scenes in many key events of the twentieth century. Already a huge bestseller across Europe, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is a fun, feel-good book for all ages.."

Review

The hundred-year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared is a novel by the Swedish writer Jonas Jonasson.  The main action is set in the nowadays Sweden, but the book contains several memories of the main character where we are able to travel to a huge range of historic times and countries, such as Spain, China or the EEUU.

It all starts on the one-hundredth birthday of Allan Karlsson, when he decided to run away before his party at the old people home. Incredibly he climbs out his bedroom window and starts his getaway. Beginning when he steals a suitcase from a young man waiting at a bus station, this will lead to strange journey where Allan meets very different and implausible characters. Actually, with some of them he will create a quite curious and weird gang that end up running away from a not very intelligent police and an apparently dangerous band. Besides this journey, we are able to discover the unbelievable past of Allan, involved in many different moments of history that one could never imagined.

The great strength of this book is the perfect combination of the present time and the past. It allows you to get to know pretty well the main character of the novel, and to understand why he behaves the way he does. As it covers a hundred years you have the opportunity to discover many different historic moments from the neutral point of view of Allan, a man who never thinks about politics but surprisingly ends involved with all kind of politicians, from communists to dictators.  My only criticism is that although is fast-moving book sometimes the description of certain moments are rather heavy-going.

If you want to read an entertaining and gripping story this is definitely the perfect book for you. Don’t miss the chance to get hooked by this intriguing story, who knows what is going with this curious gang in the end?
